Design crowdsourcing platform 99designs today announced the acquisition of Berlin-based 12designer, its top rival in Europe.

The terms of this deal weren’t disclosed but, as part of it, 12designer CEO Eva Missling (above) will now become 99designs’ general manager for Europe. Missling will continue to oversee 12designer, which boasts a community of more than 20,000 users across Europe. For now, 12designer will continue to operate as a standalone site.

It’s the first acquisition for 99designs, which is based in California and raised $35 million in a round led by Accel Partners last year – reminiscent of design marketplace Fab’s acquisition of German rival Casacanda in an all-stock deal.

“This acquisition enables us to build significantly on our existing momentum and resources in Europe and gives us an ideally situated base in Berlin. As the tech startup and design hub of Europe, there is no better place from which to implement our aggressive regional growth plans” said 99designs CEO Patrick Llewellyn.

99designs is the world’s largest online graphic design marketplace which connects businesses looking for creative work, with more than 175,000 graphic designers from 192 countries around the world.
