German tabloid Bild Digital has announced a partnership with travel advice portal TripAdvisor. The two companies on Tuesday launched Travelbook – a website offering a combination of travel articles and advice from TripAdvisor’s active global community.
Travelbook aims to offer users a holistic approach to planning their travels – it markets itself as part-magazine, part-community, part-travel agent and part-travel guide.
The new site includes an editorial team, who will regularly publish travel-related articles, while TripAdvisor’s existing community will be integrated into the site – Travelbook users can share their experiences and rate hotels, restaurants and locations.
Travelbook also includes TripAdvisor’s booking portal, letting users search for flights, hotels and car rentals directly on the site.
Bild’s Managing Director Donata Hopfen commented on the unusual hybrid model: “Our strategic cooperation combines the experience of the TripAdvisor community with the journalistic competence of Bild. This secures Travelbook’s unique position in the market, because it offers everything in the one place: travel inspiration, information, user feedback, along with the potential to directly organise trips.”
The partnership has the potential to reach a broad audience – ComScore’s online audience measurement system Media Matrix ranked TripAdvisor as the largest travel website worldwide, while Bild.de is Germany’s largest news and entertainment portal. The news could come as a blow to TripAdvisor’s German competitor, HolidayCheck.de.
