Twitter is expected to celebrate its 500 million milestone on February 25, a study by third party Twitter app Twopcharts reveals.

Since May, when the figure was at 300 million, there’s been a 65% increase in new accounts. Currently, an average of 13 new Twitter accounts is created per second.

Although its user base is growing at an alarming rate, it’s unknown how many of those new accounts remain active and aren’t spammers.

Twitter still lags behind social media giant Facebook, which is a few months away from hitting the billion user mark.

In November, China-based Twitter clones, Tencent WEibo and Sina Weibo, passed the 550 million user mark.

Twitter is expected to close in on 750 million users by the end of the year, and a billion users – sometime in 2013.
