People’s choice – Hypejar, Project OONA, Twisper crowned this year’s favourite startups

We asked. You voted. After a week of frenzied social media campaigning and – we hope – some serious deliberation, the results are in. Here are our readers' favourite three startups, taken from a shortlist of the 23 companies we've profiled this year as Startup of the Week.

#1 Hypejar

We should have known! Canadian newcomers Hypejar – co-founded by an attorney, a medical student, a computer scientist and an SEO whizz – are in the business of hype, creating a go-to site for upcoming products, releases and other cultural currency.

Maru Winnacker#2 Project OONA

Project OONA, the latest business baby by the irrepressible Maru Winnacker (right), is a platform for users to design and purchase their own handbags. Part of a new breed of classy eCommerce companies in Berlin (see also Mornin' Glory, Bloomy Days, Outfittery and Startup of the Week alumni Evencki).

#3 Twisper

We spotted this one, a travel app "for the sophisticated lifestyle consumer", a few months before its expected release for iOS (next month). Twisper co-founders David de Brito and Darius Moeini (below), based in Berlin, promise us a guide, diary and social tool for all the places we want to visit.

Honorable mention: Resmio

Resmio, our fourth-placed finalist, impressed a fair few in the office when we profiled co-founder Yasha Tarani last month. The big, useful idea: help restaurants manage demand by offering discounts for those willing to dine in off-peak hours.

Thanks for voting, and congrats to the winners. How close was it, you ask? Here's the top ten by the percentage of the vote they won (via Polldaddy):
